3-month-old killer whale dies in captivity at SeaWorld
A killer whale less than a year in age died at SeaWorld in Texas this week. The park confirmed the death of Kyara, who was only 3 months old, due to “progressive health issues.” In a statement, the park said its health team members tried to administer emergency care for the calf but were unable to restore its health. The statement also said that SeaWorld’s team of veterinarians believe that she might have had an infection, such as pneumonia, that continued to decline. According to SeaWorld, the animal’s decline in health and eventual death was not related to her being born in captivity. PETA issued a statement in response to SeaWorld’s saying, “Kyara has died at SeaWorld at just 3 months old. She never got to swim in the ocean. #BoycottSeaWorldDay”The group has been quite vocal on its opposition to the park having orca whales in captivity.
