Algae bloom reported at Herrick Lake

An active blue-green algae bloom was confirmed this week at Herrick Lake Forest Preserve in Wheaton.

Such blooms can make pets, children and people with weak immune systems sick if they ingest or inhale water that has algae present.

The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County is monitoring the lake in cooperation with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.

In the meantime, officials caution visitors not to touch the algae; to keep pets away from the water; and to wash their skin (or pet's fur) thoroughly as soon as possible if contact is made.
