SPENCER — The beach at Luther Hill Park is officially closed for the season, a day earlier than expected, because of a continuing outbreak of blue-green algae.

Officials said swimming is prohibited due to the toxic nature of the algae which can be deadly for pets who drink, or swim in, the water.

"The algae is still very prevalent," Fire Chief Robert P. Parsons said, in a reverse call to residents on Friday.

The beach was ordered closed on Wednesday when the outbreak was discovered and officials had hoped to reopen the swimming hole but the algae has persisted and officials decided to end the swimming season.
