"It's really a shame," Richard Kennedy said as he looked at the algae build-up on the river behind his home.

He's lived on the water for the last six years and is sick of the algae.

"I pay taxes like everyone else here. I shouldn’t have to escape my home to keep my children safe," said Kennedy.

But that's exactly what he has to do and what he plans to do this weekend.

"We may end up in Jupiter. We may end up in Fort Pierce, but now we’re not going to be spending as much money in Stuart as we otherwise would," he said.

Kennedy has friends coming in town from South Carolina with their two-year-old. He said they were looking forward to enjoying the sandbar and restaurants in Stuart, but now they're not going to have that chance.

"It’s dangerous for her to be on this water and for us to all go on the boat," said Kennedy.

He said the algae problem needs to be fixed, not only for those who live on the water, but also for the economy.

"We need to maintain the things that keep this place beautiful, that encourage people to come down here and spend time. So that those of us that are here full time are able to enjoy everything we enjoy about it full time too," said Kennedy.

He said all of his other friends went to the Bahamas on Friday to enjoy the long weekend and avoid the algae.
