LOGAN, Utah (AP) - A harmful algae bloom is closing the North Beach at Mantua Reservoir in northern Utah.

The Herald Journal reports the reservoir east of Brigham City has been under a “warning advisory” since mid-August, and on Monday health department officials increased the warning level on the north beach to a “danger advisory.”

The warning advisory tells people not to swim, water ski or drink the water, and to thoroughly clean fish and discard the guts. Pets and livestock should also keep out.

The danger advisory means the beach is completely closed.

Cyanobacteria from harmful algal blooms can cause rashes, respiratory problems, stomach aches and other issues. They can also poison animals.
