The Barwon River has been closed in Geelong due to an outbreak of blue-green algae.

The bloom has been detected in sections of the local river, with hot weather, low water flows and high nutrient levels contributing to the outbreak.

Warning signs have been put up in the affected stretches of the Barwon, urging the public to avoid contact with the water.

Corangamite Catchment Management Authority is also encouraging pet owners not to allow their pets to go into the river.

Any fish caught in the contaminated water should not be eaten.

The authority says it will let the public know when conditions change and it is safe to reopen the Barwon.
