Almy Pond in Newport should be avoided due to algae, says RIDOH

NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) – The Rhode Island Departments of Health and Environmental Management announced today residents should avoid Almy Pond in Newport, because of blue-green algae blooms.

Blue-green algae, also called cyanobacteria, can produce toxins that are harmful to people and animals. Coming in contact with the algae can irritate the skin, eyes, nose, and throat. Ingesting the algae can cause stomach problems.

RIDOH recommends all water recreation, including fishing and kayaking, should also be avoided.

If you come in contact with the blue-green algae, RIDOH says to rinse your skin with clear water as soon as possible. When you get home, take a shower and wash your clothes.

The advisory will be in effect until further notice.
