Another dolphin stranded one day after 12 washed ashore

DUXBURY, Mass. — Crews are trying to rescue a dolphin that because stranded in a creek Monday, one day after 12 others washed ashore between Duxbury and Barnstable.

The low tide is to blame for stranding the dolphins, but as the tide rose six of them were able to get back into the open water on their own.

“Our rescue department, which is based in Quincy, they received a call late morning about a single live dolphin and then one about a mother and calf came up about an hour or two later,” Kathryn Tuxbury, of the New England Aquarium, said.

However, the New England Aquarium and International Fund for Animal Welfare worked together to get the dolphins off the beach and back into the water.

Rescuers said it’s not uncommon for dolphins to get stuck in the beaches in early spring, but having so many that needed help at one time was a bit unusual.

The mother and her calf that were rescued were tagged and released back into the water.

“It’s a great feeling, and that’s what it’s all about,” Tuxbury said.
