Beached Whale Reported At Jersey Shore

A humpback whale was beached in Sea Isle City on Friday, police confirmed via Twitter.

It was beached around 3 p.m. Friday afternoon, according to the Press of Atlantic City.

The whale was seen off the coast of Strathmere earlier in the day, the Press of Atlantic City reports.

Workers with the Marine Mammal Stranding Center were on the scene, preparing to move the whale with heavy equipment, according to the report.

The cause of death was unknown, but a representative from the Mammal Stranding Center told the Philly Voice there were no visible injuries, and that the whale may have died because of illness or because its mother had died.

The whale is 33 feet long, and 20 tons, and officials believe the whale may have been dead between four and five days, according to CBS 3. Officials told the news station it appeared to be a juvenile male.

Humpback whales can typically grow to be 42 feet long, and weigh 66,000 pounds.
