Baltimore, Md. (WBFF) The National Aquarium announced the death of Maya, an 18-year-old Atlantic bottlenose dolphin, this morning.

The aquarium stated that Maya's health had started to go downhill in March, when she began exhibiting signs of illness, including a significant loss of appetite.

Steps were immediately taken to get her well again by the aquarium's Animal Health team. Maya was provided with round-the-clock care. A regimen of fluids supplemented with vitamins, electrolytes, antibiotics and other medications were given to her while the team worked to determine the cause of her symptoms.

Maya's health continued to decline and she was unable to recover, despite the Animal Health teams best efforts. The decision was made to humanely euthanize her late yesterday so that she did not endure any additional pain or suffering.

"Maya will be missed dearly by the dedicated staff and volunteers who gave her such great care over the years. We thank our community for their support and compassion during this difficult time." stated the National Aquarium in a Facebook post.
