Blue-green algae alert for Murray River

A NEW red alert for blue-green algae has now been declared for the Murray River from Mildura to Wentworth.

The high alert previously issued for the Red Cliffs to Mildura stretch of river remains current.

The new declaration followed testing by Water NSW and local water authorities. Levels of blue-green algae in other sections of the river continue to fluctuate.

No one should undertake recreational activities where they may come into direct contact with the water, such as swimming, or use the water for domestic purposes including showering and washing.

Contact with the water may also pose a threat to livestock and pets. Livestock owners are reminded to continue to check stock water supplies for blue green algae and to remove stock from foreshores where surface scum is visible or blue green algae are suspected.
