Bottlenose Dolphin Dies Suddenly At Brookfield Zoo

Maxine, a 3 and a half year old dolphin at the zoo, died from an acute bacterial infection that quickly caused organ failure, the zoo said.

BROOKFIELD, IL — A bottlenose dolphin at Brookfield Zoo has passed away, the zoo said in a statement Tuesday. Maxine, a 3 and a half year old dolphin at the zoo, died from an acute bacterial infection that quickly caused organ failure, the zoo said.

Bill Zeigler, senior vice president of animal programs for the Chicago Zoological Society, said despite the tireless efforts of the animal care staff, Maxine succumbed to the aggressive disease.

"Maxine’s health issue is an isolated case and poses no danger to our other dolphins," Zeigler said in a release. "We routinely monitor the health and welfare of all of our animals, as well as monitoring the suitability of their environments. As a precautionary action, additional health screenings of our other dolphins and their environment were performed, confirming there are no indications for concern."
