TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. (WFLA) – A rescue team from the Clearwater Marine Aquarium saved a bottlenose dolphin that was caught in the shallow waters at Fred Howard Park in Tarpon Springs Sunday.

Before the CMA rescue team arrived, two lifeguards on duty set up an umbrella and placed a blanket on the animal to protect it from the sun. The dolphin was an adult male Atlantic bottlenose dolphin in good body condition, according to CMA.

It appeared to be caught in the shallows due to the low tide. The dolphin was alert to what was going on around it, the team members said.

It stayed calm while the rescuers collected blood from its flukes, positioned it on the closed cell foam mat and administered oxygen.

The team waited with the animal until the tide came to see if it would swim away. Soon before 10 p.m., it moved to the area further out passing a couple of mud flats. The team monitored its breathing for about half an hour.

The team members said the dolphin should recover from this adventure and be back to its normal condition.
