Goulburn-Murray Water has issued the message as a precaution, with other bodies of water in its network – including Lake Eppalock and Cairn Curran Reservoir – subject to warnings about the presence of blue-green algae.
The water corporation advises not all algae are dangerous and many are simply harmless plants, but testing is required.
Further information will be made available once results are received.
Visitors to Lake Eppalock and Cairn Curran have been advised to avoid the water since at least the beginning of summer, with high levels of blue-green algae detected.
Gum Lagoon, at Gunbower, is also affected by high levels of the algae.
Contact with blue-green algae can result in skin irritation, sore eyes, ears and nose, asthma, nausea, diarrhea and vomiting.
Animals can also be affected.
