Dead Humpback Whale Discovered Along Monterey Co. Coast
BREAKING: Experts said the carcass was too close to shore for scientists to get tissue samples.
MONTEREY COUNTY, CA — A dead humpback whale was found Sunday off the coast of unincorporated Monterey County, officials with the Monterey Bay Marine Life Studies group said. The group's officials posted a message at 8:09 a.m. on Facebook that said a humpback whale had washed up near the group's headquarters in the community of Moss Landing.
Scientists went to collect a fluke ID, tissue samples and to check whether the whale was hit by a boat or it got entangled in something, but the whale was too close to shore for scientists to do their work. The scientists also encountered a fin whale.
