Dead Whale Discovered on Land in Amazon

Researchers in Brazil are investigating after a dead humpback whale was discovered on land in the Amazon jungle.

The 12-month-old juvenile was found nearly 50 feet from the shore on the island of Marajo.

Biologists believe the 26-foot-long mammal may have already been dead when strong tides washed it deep into the island’s undergrowth.

This isn’t the first time a whale has been found some distance from the ocean. In 2007, an 18-foot minke whale was discovered stranded on a sandbar nearly 1,000 miles up river near the Brazilian city of Santarem. It was freed but later died.
