WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - The body of a young humpback whale has been found floating in the Port of Wilmington.
Suzanne Thurman is executive director of the MERR Institute, which rescues and cares for marine mammals. She tells The News Journal of Wilmington (https://delonline.us/2e5v93i ) that the whale was found about 3:15 a.m. Friday in a berth at the port.
Thurman says the whale is 25 to 30 feet long, and said fishing gear appeared to be tangled its pectoral fins.
She says responders from MERR Institute are working to remove the carcass from the port. When the animal is on land, a necropsy will be performed.
Debora Thompson, the port’s marketing services manager, said the whale’s body was not interfering with port operations.
