A humpback whale was found beached along Turnagain Arm near Hope Tuesday morning, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association. The agency said it was notified of the deceased animal at around 11 a.m.

According to NOAA spokeswoman Julie Speegle, the whale was spotted on the mudflats near Mile 15 of the Hope Highway. By the time responders made it to the scene, the tide had come in and swept the whale’s body away.

NOAA is still looking for the dead whale and plans to take samples and possibly conduct a necropsy once it's found, Speegle said.

Anyone who sees the whale can report the sigting to the NOAA Fisheries hotline at (877) 925-7773.
