NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) - A dead humpback whale that was pulled off a Los Angeles beach on the eve of the July 4th weekend and towed out to sea has been threatening to wash ashore again down the coast.

Lifeguard Battalion Chief Mike Halphide says the decaying whale approached Newport Beach on Sunday morning and lifeguards in a boat had to spend the day towing it far offshore.

But an overnight south wind brought the massive corpse near Newport again Monday and a lifeguard boat took it under tow once more.

The humpback originally washed up on Dockweiler Beach in Los Angeles County on June 30. It was refloated on a high tide on the evening of July 1 and towed out to sea.

Newport Beach is about 40 miles south in Orange County.
