EDGARTOWN, Mass. (WWLP) – There’s a whale of a problem at one of Martha’s Vineyard’s most popular beaches this Fourth of July.

A dead whale has washed up on shore at the left fork of South Beach in Edgartown.

The Trustees of Reservations advises people to avoid swimming in the area, due to the risk that the whale carcass may attract sharks.

Aside from the safety concerns, there is now the question of how to deal with the carcass. The Vineyard Gazette reports that Edgartown’s conservation agent is in contact with several organizations. One possibility could be pulling the animal farther out to sea, though that won’t likely happen until at least Tuesday.
