KENNEBUNKPORT (WGME) -- There was an unsightly and stinky scene in Kennebunkport, after a dead whale washed up on Goose Rocks Beach.

Crews spent today trying to clean it up.

Police say the whale was first reported Wednesday night and experts examined it yesterday.

They say the minke whale is between 22 and 25 feet long and appears to have been dead for some time.

It was found along the west end of the beach where there weren't too many beachgoers

Some people still came down to take a look.

“We stopped in and saw the commotion this morning and just came back to check and see their progress,” says Brian Sigtermans.

“It’s pretty crazy. It’s gigantic, pretty disgusting, actually he’s cutting into it right now,” says Mike Lauber.

Experts examined the minke whale yesterday and said they couldn't determine how the whale died.
