Sea Rangers with the help of locals have battled for twelve hours to save a rare False Killer Whale at the remote community of Umbakumba on Groote Eylandt.

The false killer whale became stranded on a sandbar inside a lagoon that is home to sharks and crocodiles. After finding out the community came together to keep it wet with buckets of water and towels while waiting for the tide to turn.

After a few rescue attempts rangers herded it out to sea with the help of a tinny. Ranger Adrian Hogg spoke to Kate O'Toole about the community effort to save the rare mammal.
