Diver lives to tell tale of almost being swallowed by Bryde’s whale
A diver in South Africa escaped from a whale of a tale that some have only heard about in the Bible. Rainer Schimpf, 51, was diving off Port Elizabeth when he was sucked into the mouth of a Bryde’s whale. The diver believed it was an accident after the whale promptly spat him back out. Schimpf was out with a group of divers taking photos of sharks in the area so the giant mammal’s appearance was a bit of surprise. During an interview, Schimpf said he was caught off guard but then quickly realized it was a whale and not a shark. "I instantly knew it was a whale because there was a pressure on my hip which increased slightly to a point where it stopped. "Had it been a shark, it would have been two of me, and I don't think that I would have seen anything again,” he told 9news. Even though it was a tumultuous experience, Schimpf isn’t going to let it scare him from jumping back into the ocean. It is quite the story, though, he said. "Gee, it is quite the tale to tell ... I was spat out by a whale," he said.
