Dolphin Quest Terminates Contract With Dolphinaris Arizona

DolphinOn Feb. 2, 2019, Dolphin Quest, the company responsible for supplying Dolphinaris with dolphins sent an email to the press stating they will no longer be affiliated with the theme park and have terminated their agreement.

The statement continued by saying the staff continues to grieve the loss of Kai and the other animals who died and they are focused on the welfare of the remaining dolphins.

Kai, a male 22-year-old dolphin, was on loan to the theme park, located in Scottsdale, Arizona. He was part of an educational program for the public. He was the fourth dolphin to die in less than two years.

The cause of death is unknown, and Kai’s health deteriorated and was euthanized on Jan. 31. ABC15 reported Kai was having difficulty breathing, swimming, and eating for two weeks.

Dolphin Quest said they had sent a senior marine mammal specialist to Dolphinaris who will monitor the remaining dolphins closely. The animals are alert, bright and healthy.

They also reported that they have contacted the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service and are working with them to devise a plan for the dolphins.

Charles Rolsky, Arizona State University’s marine researcher, says it is difficult to keep these types of animals in the desert. The facility has the best intention to have the public interact with the dolphins, but they should put the animal’s welfare first.

Staff at the theme park have been receiving death threats after Kai died. Spokesperson Jen Smith said that they come through emails, phone calls, their website chat, and social media. Law enforcement has been notified, and security has been increased at the facility.
