There is a $38,000 reward out for the conviction of the person who killed a bottlenose dolphin in southwest Florida.

In May, NOAA's Office of Law Enforcement found the dolphin with a 6-inch hole in its head, as if it had been impaled with a spear-like object.

The dolphin had been known to area biologists on North Captiva Island, and had been seen swimming around fishing boats with a group of "begging dolphins," NOAA said. The adult male dolphin might have been in a begging posture at the time of its killing.

Anyone with information is being asked to call 800-853-1964.

According to NOAA, there's been at least 26 attacks on dolphins with guns, arrows or other objects.
