Dolphin found stranded with broken jaw dies at SeaWorld
A dolphin with a broken jaw that was found last week beached in Oceanside has died, SeaWorld officials said Thursday.
Despite around the clock care, the long-beak common dolphin named Rosey died Wednesday night after initially showing some signs of improvement, park spokesman Dave Koontz said.
“As you can imagine, our animal care specialists and veterinarians did everything they could for him and are very saddened by his death,” said Koontz.
The 120-pound animal, thought to have been three to four years old, had a fracture in its upper jaw. Experts did not know what caused the injury but speculated that the dolphin may have crashed into a rock or other hard object as it was chasing fish.
It was found stranded last Thursday at St. Malo beach and taken in by SeaWorld’s animal rescue team.
So far this year SeaWorld San Diego has rescued 410 marine mammals, 200 birds and several sea turtles.
Koontz said a necropsy will be performed on the dolphin to determine its cause of death.
