Dolphin rescued from Assonet River

A dolphin was rescued from the Assonet River in Freetown on Saturday, one day after it got stuck in the mud in a nearby cove, a town official said.

“For whatever reason it came back,” said Linda Podielsky, the Freetown animal control officer.

The dolphin was beached for 8 to 10 hours on Friday, after gettting stuck in the mud in Shepard’s Cove during low tide, according to a statement from the Freetown Police Department.

The dolphin eventually freed itself and swam away, the statement said.

But on Saturday, the dolphin had no such luck.

The mammal stayed too long in the river and had to be rescued by staff from Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, Podielsky said.

The staff took custody of the dolphin, whose fate was not known on Saturday night, she said.

The dolphin’s presence in the southeast waters is puzzling, she said.

“It’s very unusual for a dolphin to be hanging out in this area,” Podielsky said.
