Celebrity environmental activist Erin Brockovich, who inspired a 2000 Academy Award-winning namesake film, plans to tour Florida's ecological disasters in September.

Brockovich, who has sounded off about cancer clusters and algae blooms, is expected to visit Florida's east coast region, but dates and locations have not been announced.

There's a suspected cancer cluster in St. Lucie County, where 11 people who've lived most of their lives in or near the 34982 ZIP code have glioblastoma, an aggressive and deadly form of brain cancer that affects about 13,000 people in the U.S. each year.

The area includes southeastern Fort Pierce, White City and Indian River Drive in St. Lucie County.

There's another cancer cluster in Brevard County, where recent tests found cancer-causing chemicals in the groundwater, reclaimed water and sewage at Satellite Beach.

The same chemicals have been found in the ground at nearby Patrick Air Force Base, where soldiers sprayed firefighting foams and buried untold wastes for decades.

Toxic algae blooms

Brockovich also has spoken out strongly about the toxic blue-green algae blooms caused by Lake Okeechobee discharges affecting both the St. Lucie River on the Treasure Coast and the Caloosahatchee River on the Gulf Coast.

She has posted myriad pictures and videos on her Facebook page of algal blooms and dead or dying aquatic life on the Gulf Coast.

"This is so wrong, at every level, that there are no words to describe it!," Brockovich wrote in one post.

In an Aug. 6 post, Brockovich cited a 2014 TCPalm investigation about how the South Florida Water Management District let a U.S. Sugar Corp. lobbyist thwart a crackdown on polluters and weaken clean-water regulations.

TCPalm obtained hundreds of district emails, Outlook calendar meeting invitations and other internal documents to shed light on the lobbyist's influence over the agency's annual environmental report.

In response, the district created a dedicated web board to allow the public to comment on the annual report as well as view all the posted comments.

Brockovich made headlines in 1992 when, working as a legal clerk, she linked the cancer-causing chemical Chromium-6 in the groundwater in Hinkley, California, to pollution by the Pacific Gas and Electric Co.

Actress Julia Roberts won an Oscar for portraying her in "Erin Brockovich."
