Global recognition for eMdloti dolphin footage
Local resident says he is blown away by the response to his video.
A VIDEO shot by an eMdloti resident has officially gone viral. Richard Melvill who captured drone footage of a pod of dolphins surfing on eMdloti beach has received more than a million views on various social media platforms. Speaking to Northglen News on Friday, Melvill said he was blown away by the support and recognition.
Since uploading the video to his Facebook page, Good Morning America, ABC, Storyful MSN as well as host of local media outlets have shared Melvill’s video.
“When I uploaded the video I really didn’t expect it to go viral. I’m just blown away with the way the video has been received. On one of the shared videos alone, there were almost a million views which is just insane. It has also been a boost for Durban in that it’s put the City on the map. I was just lucky on the day to get the amazing footage, I was actually at the beach taking photos of the surfers when my girlfriend spotted the pod. I was really fortunate to get them swimming with the surfers,” he said.
This is the second time amazing footage like this has been captured off eMdloti’s beach – in April Mike Kirk captured footage of dolphins in the surf.
