The bloated carcass of a dead whale being towed out to sea off California provided a feast for a hungry great white shark.
Video taken on Saturday by shark follower Keith Poe captured the rare sight of the great white sinking its teeth into the deceased mammal about 30kms off southern California.
The shark, estimated to be 5m in length, appeared to be pregnant, Poe told the OC Register newspaper.
"She looked like she was here to give birth. She was very large in her girth," Poe told the Register. "As she was eating the whale, it was ridiculous how big she got. She was swimming upside-down, just swimming around like she was very happy and satisfied."
Footage shows the great white sinking her giant teeth into the enormous carcass in scenes that could be straight out of the famous Jaws movies.
Later the ocean turns red as blood oozes from the dead whale after the shark had spent hours munching on the carcass.
The dead 17-metre long whale was first spotted by whale watching boats off Newport Beach on Thursday. Using a rescue boat and rope, lifeguards towed it about five miles out to sea to prevent it from attracting other fish.
