JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - The situation is critical for a dolphin that has been trapped in Old Fort Bayou for more than two weeks, according to officials with the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies.

Dr. Moby Solangi said the dolphin's situation was concerning even before Tropical Storm Cindy dumped inches of rain in Jackson County.

Because of the swollen waterways, rescuers have not been able to get to the dolphin to help, but they are hoping to come up with a plan as the water recedes.

Solangi said the lightning and thunder that came with the storm are also concerning for the mammal. He said the dolphin was already in trouble because of the low salinity levels in the bayou, and the fresh rain has made the situation even more dire.

The dolphin has been trapped in the bayou since June. 7, according to Solangi.
