The municipality made the announcement on Friday. Infrastructure Director John Martin said a regular inspection earlier in the week had revealed algae levels "above the guidelines for recreational lakes".
"We had communication with GWM Water and after that feedback decided we should close the lake given the prospect of warmer weather in coming days," he said.
"We will continue monitoring levels and as soon as they abate we are keen to let people know when the lake will be open again. We need to ensure it is safe."
Mr Martin said people should avoid eating fish caught in the lake, as blue-green algae toxins could accumulate in their bodies.
GWM Water advice on blue-green algae says it can cause skin rashes or itchiness, sore eyes, ears and nose; or if swallowed, nausea or vomiting.
