Humpback Whale Spotted Off Westport Coast

The Westport Police Marine Unit caught video of the whale near the surface.

WESTPORT, CT — A large Humpback whale was spotted off the coast of Westport Friday morning. The Police Marine Unit responded to investigate and found the whale near Cockenoe Island.

Officers made sure the whale wasn't in distress and watched until the whale swam into deeper waters in Long Island Sound.

Humpback whales can grow to be up to 60 feet in length and weigh between 25 and 40 tons. They are primarily dark grey with some areas of white, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

They are known for breaching the surface and slapping their tails against the water's surface.

Humpback whales typically feed during the spring, summer and fall in the western North Atlantic ocean.
