Humpback whales have started traveling in massive herds

Could it be a sign the end is nigh? Humpback whales are migrating in supergroups of up to 200.

Although these whales are known for being solitary and usually travel in groups less than 10, researchers have discovered that hundreds of them are gathering off the coast of South Africa to feed.

“I’ve never seen anything like this,” Ken Findlay, lead author of the study, told Time. “[N]o such dense feeding aggregations have been reported elsewhere in low or mid latitudes during Southern Hemisphere humpback whale migrations.”

That’s not the only strange pattern: Humpback whales are supposed to holiday in Antarctica during the summer months, not South Africa. Despite being an endangered species in the 19th century due to whaling, the resilient animals have made a significant comeback over the past decade.
