A rare killer whale was spotted off the coast of Kerry earlier this week, as these incredible snaps by Richard Creagh show.

The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group spotted the Orcinus orca swimming off the Slea Head Peninsula off the coast of Dingle on Monday.

According to the IDWG the killer whale is called "John Coe" and is well known around these waters being known to the Scottish West Coast Community Group.

John Coe was first sighted back in 1983 and was believed to be an adult at that stage, he was first seen in Irish waters in 2004 off the coast of Donegal.

The IDWG said: "This individual is quite easily recognised by the large notch on the base of the trailing edge of his dorsal fin, a feature which makes him unique and easily recognisable.

"John Coe is perhaps one of the best known killer whales in the British Isles."

IDWG's Nick Massett spotted the killer whale, who until Monday had not been seen since 2013 in Irish waters.

It has been a great summer of marine sightings off the coast of Kerry so far this year with as many as 8 humpback Whales spotted in a single day during May.
