Rescue workers have attempted to guide a humpback whale out to sea after it became stuck in a California harbour.

The 35-foot whale was discovered swimming between the boats in Ventura Harbor on Saturday afternoon.

Footage showed the huge creature twisting and turning through the shallow water.

Harbour master John Higgins said it wasn’t clear whether the whale was sick or injured.

"I know that earlier today when it was navigating… under the lower tide that it was bumping into boats and there was some superficial cuts and bruises to it, but I don't know to what extent," he told KABC-TV.

Rescue workers unsuccessfully tried playing recorded whale sounds in a bid to entice the mammal out to the ocean.

Dr Rachel Cartwright, a biology lecturer at California State University, said the noises may have bounced around the harbour and further disorientated the whale.
