SYRACUSE, NY – A ban on swimming at Jamesville Beach in Lafayette has been lifted because an algae bloom in the water has dissipated.

The Onondaga County Health Department closed the beach to swimmers last week because of a potentially toxic algae bloom.

Algae blooms often show up in the summer in shallow areas of lakes.

Algae can turn the water green and form thick layers of surface scum. Certain types of algae can release toxins that may cause skin or eye irritation, diarrhea and vomiting if swallowed.

The department said people and animals should keep out of the water where algae blooms are present.

The county banned swimming Tuesday at Oneida Shores Beach in Cicero because of high levels of E. coli bacteria in the water.
