SPENCER — Luther Hill Park is closed until further notice due to an algae bloom.

Residents living on Lake Whittemore have been advised to refrain from swimming or allowing pets enter the water.

The closure was announced Tuesday via an automated call from the town.

The blue-green algae, also know as Cyanobacteria, can sometimes cause health problems for humans and their pets.

Respiratory issues and nausea can be experienced by people exposed to the algae.

If pets consume the water, in some circumstances, it can be deadly, according to vetnow.com.

Residents will be alerted when the lake is deemed safe for swimming, officials said.
