The Blue-green algae red alert level for Lake Wyangan has been downgraded to Amber, after recent tests showed lower levels of the toxic bacteria.
Monitoring is still ongoing and the alert level may change back to red before January 26, however Lake Wyangan and Catchment Management Project Officer Tom Ryan hopes it will remain amber for the approaching long weekend.
However while the lake may not currently be on red-alert, there are other dangers in the water users should be aware of.
Mr Ryan encourages everyone choosing to use the lake for water sports and swimming to be mindful of the low level of water and risks associated with it.
“Because the water is so low, there are a lot of shallow water hazzards,” Mr Ryan said.

“It is still a bit dicey with a few submerged logs poking up, so people should keep their eyes open and take precautions.”
The Lake’s facilities were open since December 14 when the red level was reached, but lake-goers were advised to avoid recreational activities and domestic uses of the water, being mindful of the threat to animals as well.
