In a daring act, a group of friends rescued ten dolphins who got trapped on Kalamb beach due to low tide. They then carried the dolphins and put them in the water.

The beach, where two youths drowned a few days ago, is very unstable and has unexpected flow of waves. Due to illegal sand mining, there are several holes on the beach.

The incident took place on Wednesday. Abhishekh Gavankar (23), Jenil Bari (22), Pranay Gavankar alias Prem (26), Ayaz Shaikh (26), Rahul (22) and Joy D'cunha (41), were all residents of Virar and would go regularly to the beach to play football.

'FOUND THE DOLPHINS WHEN WE WENT TO THE BEACH TO PLAY FOOTBALL'

Says Abhishekh, "On Wednesday, when we reached the beach for football practice we found several dolphins out at the beach. It was low tide. The dolphins must have come to the beach during high tide but could not go back after low tide and got trapped at the beach."

He adds that everyone was hesitant to help, as it involved going into the sea. Since he knew how to swim in rough waters, he offered to go in the water. "If we had not acted quick, then there was a full chance that the dolphins would have died," he says.

Abhishekh and his friends started picking up the dolphins one by one. Talking about the rescue operation, he says, "It was a tough and tiring job. But we managed to put eight dolphins back into the sea. A few more locals joined in and they too put back two dolphins."
