California banned killer whale captivity and breeding.

California became the first state to announce a ban. CNN reports California Governor Jerry Brown signed the bill Tuesday.

The new law stated that killer whales already in captivity could remain in captivity, but only for "educational presentations."

SeaWorld San Diego announced similar changes. The park ended its breeding program and phased out the killer whales theatrical shows earlier this year.

The company was under fire for its treatment of killer whales since the 2013 documentary "Blackfish."

According to its website, SeaWorld San Diego said it plans to retain 11 whales under its care.
