Water samples taken from two algae blooms reported in the southeast portion of Lake Okeechobee have come back toxic; that’s according to data posted on the Florida Department of Environmental Protection's website.

The first bloom, seen on a map posted on the agency’s site, shows levels more than double the amount considered too toxic for recreational exposure, meaning swimming and other water activities could be hazardous for humans.

According to DEP data, the second bloom tested came back with toxicity levels twice the amount considered too toxic to drink.

CBS12 is reaching out to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection Tuesday morning for an update as to how the recent findings contribute to the overall big picture of Lake Okeechobee’s current health and how the present conditions compare to previous years.
