BALTIMORE (WBFF) -- PETA has donated $10,000 to Baltimore’s National Aquarium, in a show of support for the decision to transfer its dolphins to a seaside sanctuary.

“PETA is pleased to support the National Aquarium’s move to end the confinement of these intelligent and sensitive marine animals,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “This landmark decision sets a tremendous precedent and will give these dolphins the chance to feel ocean currents, hear wild dolphins’ calls, and enjoy a taste of freedom.”

The National Aquarium in June announced it would create the “first of its kind” dolphin sanctuary, slated for completion by the end of 2020.

The sanctuary is intended to be a "protected, year-round, seaside refuge," for the dolphin colony.

Aquarium officials say the $10,000 from PETA will help fund the dolphin sanctuary.

Dolphin Discovery is the Aquarium’s largest exhibit, by gallons of water.

The exhibit opened in 1990 and is currently home to eight Atlantic bottlenose dolphins; Nani, Jade, Spirit, Maya, Bayley, Chesapeake, Beau and Foster.
