Migaloo, believed to be the world’s only white humpback whale, has been given his own police escort as he makes his annual migration along the Australian coast because sightseeing boats are getting too close.

The famous whale, first photographed in 1991 and last spotted two years ago, was slowly swimming north along the coast of Queensland on Friday morning, shadowed by boatloads of police and environmental protection officers.

Humpback whales make an annual mid-winter migration from Antarctic waters to northern Australia where they give birth.

Migaloo – an albino – was given his own escort on Thursday after environmental officers feared that eager sightseers were beginning to stress the whale.

He is believed to about 14m long and may weigh up to 40 tons.
