BERKELEY TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) - Researchers have buried a rare whale that washed up dead along a New Jersey beach.

A kayaker spotted the carcass of the Blainville’s beaked whale on the Barnegat Bay side of Island Beach State Park on Dec. 29.

The Marine Mammal Stranding Center says the 15-foot-long male whale weighed nearly 800 pounds. There was no obvious cause of death.

The center last responded to the death of a Blainville’s beaked whale in Marlboro in 1989.
