A rare whale beached from rough seas is being kept safe as rescuers battle to release it back into open seas.

Images show the 3.75-metre beaked whale washed ashore on Mystics Beach at Minnamurra, on New South Wales south coast.

Rescuers  waited for the weather to improve before releasing the half tonne whale back into the ocean, reports ABC.

The deep-sea mammal was moved to a nearby beach by the Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia (ORCCA).

'The ocean conditions have continued to deteriorate and it was very unsafe for both the whale and personnel to be in that area,' ORCCA president Ronny Ling said.

He said it is important the animal is not released prematurely as it could become stranded again in the big seas.

Parts of the NSW coast have been battered by wild weather, with the State Emergency Service receiving 50 call-outs overnight due to the havoc caused by the wild weather.
