BOSTON – A famous humpback whale that had been feared dead by researchers was spotted last weekend north of Cape Cod.

The whale, named Echo, was last seen in September during a serious entanglement in fishing gear and was believed to have suffered fatal injuries.

Echo was identified by markings on her fluke during the first New England Aquarium whale watch of the season last Saturday at Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary.
