WEXFORD COUNTY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) -- The water quality and blue-green algae levels of Lake Cadillac has been an on-going concern for the community for more than a year.

The city of Cadillac hired Restorative Lake Sciences to study the lake and the connecting, Lake Mitchel over the last year.

On Monday night at a city council meeting, the consultants showed council members their findings.

Council members saw scans of the lake's depth, vegetation and blue-green algae levels.

“What is starting to happen in Lake Cadillac is it's starting to have a lot more algae and a lot less vegetation,” said Restorative Lake Sciences, Dr. Jennifer Jermalowicz-Jones. “That's not a healthy scenario, it's very difficult to get an aquatic ecosystem back in balance when that vegetation has been depleted.”

At the meeting, the consultants said some of their biggest concerns were lake front property owners using toxic fertilizer and overabundance geese on the lake.

No final resolutions were made Monday night, but the consultants are going to continue to study the lake and work on implementing some solutions this summer.
