Search for gold in algae
Nelson’s Cawthron Institute is to build a National Algae Centre with help from a $6 million investment from the government’s Provincial Growth Fund.
Chief executive Charles Eason says it will enable Cawthron scientists to expand their internationally-recognised work in the rapidly growing algae sector and create value for existing and future partners.
The project is backed by iwi leaders who see it as creating new possibilities for aquaculture.
Cawthron has more than 30 years of expertise in algae research, from microscopic level through to its impact in marine ecosystems.
It is one of only a few organisations worldwide to specialise in extracting high-value bioactive compounds from algae.
