Spectacular sight! Whales breaching in Boston Harbor
Spectacular sights like this are emerging in Boston Harbor more frequently this summer. Humpback whales were spotted breaching close to shore Tuesday with visitors getting a glimpse of the rare occurrence.
"We saw seven to 10 whales that were breaching," one whale watcher said. "It was amazing."
The activity in the harbor and in the outer harbor is a bit unusual as the whales are following fish to feed on.
"Typically when those types of whales are seen in the harbor, they tend to be young juveniles." said Laura Howes of Boston Harbor Cruises.
But as majestic as these sights are, coming so close to the city in a major shipping channel can pose a serious danger.
"The most important thing we want boaters to know that whales are around," Howes said. "Be alert. Look for a whale. Slow down and be very vigilant."
